iometer is a fantastically useful and free performance measurement tool for disks and disk arays. Here are a few notes on using it.

iometer has 2 components, the iometer.exe (which as the name suggests, runs on Windows only) and dynamo, the work load generator (multiplatform). To run iometer:

1. Load the iometer.exe on a suitable windows server
2. copy dynamo on the server you want to run the test on
3. run iometer.exe
4. start dynamo on the test host, pointing in back to the windows server running the iometer.exe, e.g.

dynamo -i iometer-host -m testhostname &
